What Is the Keyword Density Checker?

Keyword density is the share of a text made up by a given word or phrase: a term used 15 times in a 1,000-word article has a density of 1.5%. SEOs check it as a sanity tool — to confirm the page is actually about its topic, and to catch accidental repetition that reads as stuffing.

There is no ideal percentage to aim at. Search engines understand topics, synonyms and entities, not just exact-match counts. Use this checker diagnostically: if your target phrase barely appears, the page may be off-topic; if it appears every other sentence, the writing has a problem regardless of SEO.

How to Use It

  1. Paste the content into the box.
  2. Read the single-word table for overall topic signals.
  3. Check the 2-word and 3-word tables for your target phrases.
  4. Edit for natural reading first; use the numbers to catch accidents, not as a target.

How Density Is Calculated

Density is a simple ratio: (occurrences of the term ÷ total words) × 100. A phrase used 12 times in a 1,200-word article has a density of 1%. For multi-word phrases, this checker counts the phrase occurrences against total words the same way, which is the convention most SEO tools use — a 2-word phrase appearing 10 times in 1,000 words reads as 1% (some tools double-count the words inside phrases; if you compare tools, expect small differences from exactly this choice).

Common filler words (the, a, and, of…) are excluded from the single-word table so the signal stays readable, but phrases are built from the raw text so real expressions — including ones you did not plan — surface in the 2- and 3-word tables.

What Healthy Content Looks Like

Healthy copy is recognised by coverage, not by a percentage. The target topic appears where it naturally belongs — title, introduction, a heading or two, the conclusion — and the rest of the page does its work in synonyms, related terms and specifics: names, numbers, steps, examples. A page about "monthly seo services" that also discusses audits, reporting, retainers and link building is topically complete without repeating its main phrase in every paragraph.

The warning signs this checker exists to catch are mechanical: the exact phrase in nearly every heading, the same 3-word expression opening paragraph after paragraph, keyword counts that climb because sentences were bent around them. Readers feel it as a strange stiffness before any algorithm does. The Word Counter gives you the raw counts behind this table while you draft.

Fixing a Page That Over- or Under-Uses a Phrase

Over-use: read the flagged sentences aloud. Replace repeats with pronouns, synonyms or the specific detail the sentence was avoiding ("the service" instead of the full phrase, a named deliverable instead of a general claim). Check headings first — they carry the most weight and the most temptation. Under-use: do not sprinkle the phrase in afterwards; instead check whether the page genuinely answers the query. Usually the fix is a missing section — a definition, a process, a price discussion — and writing that section naturally brings the topic's vocabulary with it.

Then re-run the text here and read the tables once more — as a final sanity check on your way to publishing, not as a score to maximise.

Under-use usually means a missing section, not missing keywords

Reading a Report: What to Look at First

Start with the 3-word phrases, sorted by count. In healthy copy the top of that table is a mixture of the topic phrase, the brand name and ordinary constructions from your headings. If one exact phrase towers over everything else — double the runner-up — read its sentences; that is where stuffing, if any, lives.

Then the single-word table: the top five words should read like a topic summary of the page. If a word that has nothing to do with the subject (a leftover from a copied template, a boilerplate CTA repeated per section) sits near the top, you have found dilution — text that occupies the page without serving its query. Finally, compare the shape, not the numbers, against a ranking competitor’s page pasted into the same tool: their spread of phrases shows what coverage looks like for this query. Borrow the shape — the subtopics — never their sentences.

Privacy: this tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded, stored or tracked — close the tab and it is gone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What keyword density should I aim for?

None. Write for the reader and cover the topic fully. As a rough smell-test, a main phrase around 0.5–1.5% in a long article is common; far above that usually reads unnaturally.

Does keyword stuffing still work?

No — it is a spam signal and, more importantly, it makes copy that real visitors bounce from. Density checking is for avoiding accidents, not for forcing a number up.

Why do phrases show words I did not target?

Because the tool reports what is actually there. Repeated phrases you did not plan — a boilerplate sentence, a repeated subheading phrase — are exactly what this check is good at surfacing.

Should headings and anchor text be included?

For a full picture, paste the whole page text including headings. For body-copy editing, paste just the article. Both are legitimate checks with different purposes.
