What Is the Google SERP Preview Tool?

Your search result (the "snippet") is your free advert on Google: a title, a URL and a short description. Google truncates titles at roughly 600 pixels (often 50–60 characters) and descriptions around 150–160 characters on desktop — anything longer is replaced with an ellipsis or rewritten.

A preview tool lets you write to the space you actually have. It cannot guarantee Google will show your exact text — Google rewrites snippets when it thinks another passage fits the query better — but a well-fitted title and description are shown as written most of the time.

How to Use It

  1. Enter the page title as it will appear in your title tag.
  2. Enter the page URL or slug.
  3. Write the meta description and watch the counters.
  4. Adjust until both bars are in the safe zone, then use the text on your page.

What You Get

How Google Builds Your Snippet

The title in the result normally comes from your page's title tag — but Google rewrites it when the tag is too long, stuffed, duplicated across pages, or a worse match for the query than a heading on the page itself. The description comes from your meta description when it fits the query; otherwise Google assembles one from visible page text around the search terms.

That is why this preview is a planning tool, not a promise. A title and description written to fit, that honestly summarise the page, are used as written for most queries — the rewrite rate drops sharply when the supplied text is already doing the job. Think of the preview as the version you are proposing to Google; make the proposal good. When the text is ready, generate the tags themselves with the Meta Tag Generator.

Title and Description Lengths That Survive

Google truncates by pixel width, not character count, which is why wide letters (W, M, capitals) eat budget faster than narrow ones (i, l). In practice: titles survive at roughly 50–60 characters, descriptions at roughly 140–155 on desktop and a little less on mobile. The bars in this tool use those practical ranges — green means the full text will normally display, amber means it is near the edge, red means expect an ellipsis.

Front-load what matters. Put the topic and the differentiator early in both fields, so even a truncated version still says what the page is. A title ending mid-thought and a description ending mid-sentence are wasted space that a competitor's clean snippet will beat for the click.

Title: topic first, brand last, ~50–60 characters
Description: the honest promise of the page, ~140–155 characters
Avoid ALL CAPS and keyword lists — both invite rewrites
Check mobile too: slightly less room, same rules

Writing Snippets That Earn the Click

Treat the snippet as a two-line advert whose only budget is accuracy. Include the specifics a searcher is deciding on: the topic in their words, one concrete detail (a number, a range, a named feature), and — where honest — a reason to choose this result: updated for this year, with prices shown, with examples. Avoid claims the page cannot cash; a click that bounces in five seconds teaches Google the result disappointed, and it teaches the visitor not to trust your brand's other results either.

One description per page, written for that page. Duplicated descriptions across a site are a reliable way to get all of them ignored in favour of machine-assembled text.

Before and After: Fixing a Weak Snippet

Before: the title reads "Home - Best SEO Services Company India USA UK Cheap Prices". It is stuffed, it truncates after "Company", and it promises nothing checkable. The description is the first line of the homepage text, cut mid-sentence by Google. In the preview, the problems are visible at a glance — that is the point of previewing.

After: the title becomes "SEO Services With Published Prices | BrandName" — 47 characters, topic first, differentiator stated. The description becomes a complete sentence pair: what is offered, with the concrete detail (prices published, packages named) inside 150 characters. Nothing about the page changed; only its advert on the results page did. Click-through on such fixes is not guaranteed — position still dominates — but a fitted, specific snippet consistently outperforms a truncated, generic one at the same position, and it costs ten minutes in this tool rather than a redesign.

Privacy: this tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded, stored or tracked — close the tab and it is gone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Google rewrite my title or description anyway?

Google rewrites snippets when your text is too long, stuffed with keywords, or a poor match for the specific query. A fitted, honest description that matches the page is rewritten far less often.

What are the safe lengths?

Titles: aim for 50–60 characters. Descriptions: 140–155 characters keeps you safe on desktop and mobile. The bars in this tool use those practical ranges.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly — it is not a ranking factor. It affects click-through rate, which is why writing it like a short, honest advert matters.

Can I preview a page that is already live?

Yes — copy its current title and description into the boxes (view-source or your SEO plugin shows them) and compare alternatives side by side.
